Newspapers
by Sr. Roberta Brunner, OSF
Newspapers? you ask—What do they have to do with ecology and the environment? Well, in a way, everything.
Most newspapers are printed on recycled paper and use ink that is biodegradable. You may want to check with your local newspaper to see what kind of paper and ink they are using and if they are protecting the environment. If not, encourage them to do so.
Newspapers are also recyclable. If recycling them is not already one of your practices you might want to consider it. Often, scout groups will come and pick your newspapers.
Newspapers are reader and user friendly. They keep us informed on many subjects, including the environment, ecology, immigration and human trafficking, which are important to all of us as Allegany Franciscans. As I travel to our convents and read newspapers from other cities and states, hardly a day goes by that at least one of these issues is not mentioned.
Newspapers are also good for one’s mental health, the funnies and some cartoons can make you smile and sometimes give you a good laugh. The crossword puzzles, jumbles, sudoku and cryptoquotes can sharpen our minds and our memories—very important as we grow older. So read and enjoy you local newspapers. And then don’t forget to recycle them!
